Tasmanian Goverment – Volunteer Marine Rescue Unit Funding – 2024

Tasmanian Goverment – Volunteer Marine Rescue Unit Funding – 2024

An announcement from Nic Street local Liberal member for Franklin "Tasmanian Liberals - Delivering Our Commitment To Our Volunteer Marine Rescue Units"

With about 5,000 kilometres of coastline, keeping Tasmanians and visitors safe on the water is a big job.

The role that each Volunteer Marine Rescue unit plays around the state is valued by all of Tasmania’s 62,000 licensed recreational boat users.

That’s why, during the 2021 State Election we committed $1 million over four years towards marine rescue vehicles, trailers and vessels.

While delivering this commitment has proved more difficult than anticipated, we remain absolutely committed to providing this support to the seven VMR units around the state: St Helens; Freycinet; Tamar; Kingborough; Ulverstone; Wynyard and Dodges Ferry (Sea Rescue Tasmania).

A re-elected majority Rockliff Liberal Government will deliver this support within 30 days of forming government, to urgently ensure our VMR units are able to secure the vehicles, trailers and vessels they need to deliver the services the Tasmanian boating community rely upon.

We will ensure that this vital support that we committed to, is delivered.

In an article by the Kingborough Chronicle, Jacquie Petrusma shared her thoughts on the recent funding:

Liberal Member for Franklin Jacquie Petrusma said this resourcing makes it safer for Tasmanians to enjoy being out on the water. “This is about preserving a Tasmanian way of life, particularly here in Kingborough, as people dive for crays and abalone or take a day out on the water,” Ms Petrusma said. “Trouble on the water can happen in a split second - and by providing this funding we are ensuring that Tasmanians can be confident that should they run into trouble, help is on the way.”

Interview with our Commander

In an interview with Kingborough Chronicle, our Commander shared insights on the importance of the funding announcement:

Volunteer Marine Rescue Kingborough (VMRK) Commander Ben Podolak said this grant boosts the unit’s operational capability. “This funding enables us to enhance our marine assets and further strengthen our valuable support to Tasmania’s emergency services in coastal search and rescue efforts. “Based in Kettering, VMRK operates in collaboration with Surf Life Saving Tasmania, united by our vision of reducing preventable drownings. “Our dedicated volunteers actively support Tasmanian Police, providing coastal rescue services across 560 kilometres encompassing Storm Bay, Frederik Henry Bay, Bruny Island, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to Recherche Bay, and the Huon River. “With this additional support, VMRK remains committed to providing an effective response to support the safety of Tasmania’s community in these coastal areas.”
