Commissioning of KR1
Monday, 14 June 2021
On Thursday 10th June 2021 we were proud to officially launch rescue vessel “Kingborough Rescue 1” into service. The replacement vessel, ‘Kingborough Rescue 1 (KR1)’, was funded by a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund.
The vessel and launching berth enable fast response times in emergencies, aid Tasmania Police in a search and rescue capacity, and provide water safety to the boating community of southern Tasmania.
Thankyou to all our volunteers and guests who turned up for the commissioning as well as Seawall Cafe & Oyster Cove Marina for warm coffees on a cold winter day!
KR1 formally a
rescue vessel for
North Stradbroke Island
With deep appreciation, we recognise Marine Rescue North Stradbroke, the previous owners of our rescue vessel. Once known as North Stradbroke 1 (NS1), this vessel faithfully served for 18 years under their watchful guidance on North Stradbroke Island before finding new shores in Tasmania. Throughout its life, NS1 played a pivotal role in conducting countless medivacs, rescues, tows, and search and rescue missions for the local Queensland community. We extend our sincere thanks to Marine Rescue North Stradbroke for their meticulous care and maintenance of the vessel, which enabled its relocation to us in Tasmania. This transition allows the vessel to carry on its noble journey as a dedicated rescue vessel, now proudly owned and operated by us (VMRK).

Transported by Gradco
On March 3rd, 2020, KR1 was expertly lifted by Burpengary Crane Hire at the Marine Rescue Bribie Island rescue base. The team’s skill and precision ensured the safe handling of KR1, preparing it for its journey south.
GradcoLoaded and ready for the road
After being lifted by Burpengary Crane Hire, KR1 was loaded onto a truck provided by Gradco (Heavy Haulage Specialists) for its journey of approximately 1,750 kilometers to Melbourne. From there, it was carefully loaded onto a ship bound for Tasmania.
Burpengary Crane HireThankyou VMR Bribie Island
We extend our gratitude to the dedicated team at Marine Rescue Bribie Island for their unwavering support in ensuring the safety and security of KR1 during the period when we coordinated shipping arrangements, conducted necessary servicing, and engaged a marine surveyor. Your assistance was truly appreciated.
